The Catahoula Leopard Dogs are very strong inbuilt. They are sturdy dogs who need a leader to train them over time. They are purebred dogs and are very rare. Catahoulas are human-friendly and need a large amount of exercise. They need a large area to be bred, much like horses, as they have equestrian energy.
History and Origin
Catahoula has its origin near Catahoula Lake in northern Louisiana. They are known as hog dogs as they were used to track the wild hogs that invaded the forests. They are considered a product of breeding between Mastiffs, Greyhounds, Bloodhounds, and the local dogs. The former breeds were brought to the area by Spanish explorers. They were first recognized by United Kennel Club in 1995. Catahoula is a unique dog in its breed and working capacity. It may not be easy for every family to adopt this breed, but this breed will prove to be a protector and friend for life.
Catahoulas are very big and have a robust physique like horses. Males have a shoulder width of 22 to 26 inches (0.66 m), weighing between 65 and 90 pounds (ca. 41 kg). On the other hand, females have a shoulder width of 20 to 24 inches (0.61 m), weighing between 60 and 65 pounds (ca. 29 kg).
Catahoulas are very friendly with people. But they can turn aggressive at times if they see a strange animal entering their territory, such as hogs. They need an outlet to release their energy as they are very active. They do not bear any form of physical abuse or mistreatment. The pet parents must ensure to take Catahoulas to park or for a walk outside the usual territory to help them socialize with people.
