Border Collie is a herding and working dog breed. The have been known to have originated from the region of Anglo-Scottish border. They are used for livestock, especially sheep. Border Collies are considered highly acrobatic, intelligent, and energetic dogs. They participate in multiple events such as disc dog, sheepdog trials, and other dog sports. Among the domestic dog breeds, Border Collies are renowned for their intelligence. They are widely used for herding livestock along with being adopted as pets. They use a direct stare technique at the sheep, called “the eye,” to intimidate them. Border Collies are easily manageable through whistling while herding. Apart from sheep, they are also used to herd pigs, poultry, ostriches, and cattle. They are also of great help to remove unwanted wild birds from grounds such as golf courses and airport runways.

Border Collies are a pro at the dog events due to their skills at herding. They have a highly developed sense of smell. Thus, they are widely used for tracking. Their natural life span is between 12 and 15 years, and the average lifespan is of 12 years. As compared to other breeds, Border Collie require more daily mental stimulation and exercises in order to keep them in good spirits.

History and Origin

Border Collie has its ancestry related to land race collies, a breed largely found in British Isles. The breed is named Border Collie because it is considered to have been originated from Anglo-Scottish border. Their origin can also be related to a breed known as Old Hemp. In 1915, the breed’s name was first used by James Reid, who was the Secretary of the International Sheep Dog Society (ISDS) in UK. The naming distinguished Border Coolie from other breeds such as rough coolie, smooth coolie, or Scotch coolie.
